Project Plan

I have returned from Austin and South Padre Island. I’m sure Kathryn will be posting a nice trip summary as she’s become a bit of a travel journalist.

In other news, I am working on a few projects but I won’t go into details until I have more to show for it.

One project I can and should talk about it this blog. At work, I’m all about process and iterative development. For my personal projects, I never seem to follow the practices that I preach so well in the office. Whenever a redesign is required, I try to do the big bang approach and wait until everything is done. As a result, many half completed designs never saw the light of day. To remedy this, I’m going to split my blog redesign into a few tasks and assign some completion dates to them in the next few days:

  • Main blog area redesign (photoshop and paper)
  • Redesign implemented in html and css
  • Photos section
  • Highlighted photos section
  • HCI commentary section
  • Movie Reviews Section
  • Mailing list

Hurray. I was surprised that you seemed to be taking the “big bang approach” – as if your page being “120% bigger than your browser width” was somehow a motivator to get more work done :)

what does the ‘mailing list’ bullet mean? will i be able to subscribe to your blog and get updates via e-mail? if so, why don’t you do that first. that way i don’t need to come back to this page again, and i wont care if whether you’ve got around to redesigning it or not.

yay! a proper engineering methodology at work! Yeah, I need to organize my personal projects that way too. Just too lazy.. :P Don’t you have an RSS feed setup?? why do you need the mailing list?

the mailing list will inform you when there’s an update with a link and perhaps include an excerpt but not the full entry.

although i have an RSS feed setup, many people who read the site don’t know what RSS is, much less use a news aggregator to check the feed.

Is it just me or does the comment window have “less than desirable” width settings? I’m stuck in a fixed width window with a horizontal scroll for the last two words of every line. Bleh. I’ve gotten to the point where I’d rather guess at the last two words and be wrong that actually scroll. :)
