Handhelds – Time for New Gadgets

Mike was talking about PDAs and of course, spending money. I recently received a Palm Zire 71 from my parents for my birthday (it’s early but I don’t see them that often) and it’s a pretty sweet machine. It’s unfortunate that Palm just announced a line of three new palms but aside from the T3, I’m not sure I’d get any of them and the T3 is more expensive.

Kat also got a handheld for her birthday. She got the HP iPaq 2210. It should be interesting to compare the two machines from both a pure tech geek and an HCI perspective. I’m a first time owner of a PDA so I have a different perspective of these. Kat is a first time owner of a Pocket PC but had used a Visor Deluxe for years before this new toy.

So far, the Palm is easier to use but the iPaq seems to have more toys you can d/l for it.

Does anyone know any must have softwares I should get for either platforms? Preferrably free because I’m now a poor student.

http://www.palmgear.com is a good resource for that. Or, you can email me for Palm apps, though I’ve been out of that scene for quite some time now.

Hey Kevin,

Try vindigo, http://www.vindigo.com. Basically it allows you to download information about events, restaurants, movies, etc. Also has maps and gives you directions on how to get there, which is awesome if you are exploring a new city. I checked, and they do have London in their list of cities. They have a 30 day free trial, and other than that it’s something like 30/year, which is resonable.

Glad to hear you are doing well and spending money :-) ,

Jean

The applications Ben and I have are for Palm OS 4.. which really doesn’t take advantage of StrongArm processor your Zire 71 has. They should still run on yours since OS 5 was designed to work on Dragonball processor. What kind of applications were you looking for?
