London: School Disco
A bunch of people from my school and work went to School Disco. Basically, it’s an excuse to dance to cheesy 80s music and see Britney impersonations. Mmm schoolgirls …
UPDATE: Ok as requested, more information. Basically, School Disco is a themed club night that happens twice a week here in London. Apparently, Saturdays seem to be busier so we’re going to try and do that sometime. Everyone dresses in school uniform (the dress code is shown on their website) which loosely translates to a school tie, untucked white dress shirt and pants for the guys and short shirts, knee high socks, sexy white shirt and tie for the women. Yes, it’s not quite balanced.
It’s especially fun here because most people had to wear school uniform in school and since I went to a Brit school in HK, I had similar experiences. I did my best impression of my last year in school: One side untucked, tie tied backwards so the thin side is out and the thick side is tucked into the shirt, and trainers (runners, sneakers) instead of dress shoes. Kat wore a plaid skirt, untucked white shirt and matching tie, and braided pigtails.
Anyways, I loosely used the excuse of my birthday and a classmate’s birthday (even though mine was 1.5wks before) to get people together to go. About 14 of us went and basically had a really silly time there. You can see from some of the pics I took (sorry, imagestation is excruciatingly slow lately). Notice the school nurse uniform that some people wore. Overall, the DJ wasn’t that great and could’ve played more classic 80s (Prince, Madonna, New Order … I didn’t even hear Dee-lite) instead of the huge amount of 80s rock and rap that was played (tho “Living Like a Prayer” is a must and “Can’t Touch This” was funny as hell).
Generally, the dance is a meat market but if you go as a big group, that part is irrelevant. There were a number of hookups from our group during the night, all of which you can either deduce from photos or will never be told. Sorry!
Btw, I heard the phenomenon has spread to Toronto by the same people.
