Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl

I have always been a big fan of Johnny Depp. His choice of roles are always interesting and seldom mainstream. From Hell to being a Dead Man, he seems to always border on the fringes of Hollywood without stepping squarely into “Summer Blockbuster”. Pirates, I think, is a pretty big departure in that sense for him but I’m glad he did it.

Take the following ingredients: Orlando Bloom (Legolas of Lord of the Rings fame), Johnny Depp, an always competent Geoffrey Rush and introduce Keira Knightley, who’s practically Wynona Ryder with a really really good figure, mix in swashbuckling, treasure, ships, a generous dose of explosions and sword fights and finally add a touch of light humour. Formulaic? Hell yes. Enjoyable? Definitely.

Johnny Depp, as always, steals the show with a great performance. For those of you who haven’t seen Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas – go see it. Especially if you liked Depp’s role because he pretty much took his Hunter S. Thompson performance, put on a pirate hat instead of a fisherman’s hat, took off his funky sunglasses and grew out his hair. Not to say that’s a bad thing. In fact, it’s a very good thing because his Hunter S. Thompson role was superb so if you haven’t seen it before, you’re in for a treat.

I doubt anyone who’s reading this review hasn’t seen it yet but if it’s till in theaters for you, go see it. If not, go and make friends with a person who owns a nice home system. As usual with summer blockbusters, they’re much more fun with big screen and big sound.

Absolutely agree, Depp’s performance steals the show. I’ve always admired Depp for taking roles that depart from the standard blockbuster-type movies. He was also in “Chocolat”, which I enjoyed as well.

Actually, Depp based his character in part on Rolling Stones’ guitarist Keith Richards. In particular, he copied Keith’s swagger, and slightly slurred English accent. Watch the movie again and try not to let this fact distract you – it’s impossible ;-)
