State of the Arcade Industry

I’ve lived in Hong Kong for about 10 years, and a lot of that time was spent in smokey arcades, trying to get in when most were “16 and over” and we were 13 just wanting a taste of Street Fighter (the first one, with just Ryu and Ken).

Since then, I’ve gotten a taste of how arcades have developed in North America, first just being incredibly behind and unoriginal and then moving towards large centres like Dave and Busters or Gameworks.

There’s a (rather long) article on the State of the Arcade Industry over at 1Up that covers a lot of things I’ve thought about over the past few years.

Personally, I’ve always thought the online and direct competition component to arcade was going to be important. The advantages of arcades are that you have players colocated and you can use custom controllers and environments. I want to see MechWarrior with full blown control panels and encased seating where you talk with your friends in the same arcade and play against people in another city. Charge people the way you charge Lazer Tag instead of pumping a billion quarters.

Now, that would be cool and I would play the MechWarrior game if they had that! Hmmm.. possible business venture?

I remember those days… you’re also not allowed to go into the arcade if you’re wearing school uniform!! To this date, I still haven’t been to one. =( I would make it a point to go to one next time I’m in HK, but I’d feel too out of place.

mike, i’ve been thinking about this as a business for years but i just don’t see it as a big thing. i guess if it expands into multiple branches (which it really needs to have any networking fun). imagine playing against a league in toronto …

C: i make a point to check out arcades every time i’m back because the machines there are always a year or two ahead and it’s interesting to see what fad they have. i recommend doing so. most arcades are quite big now and there are plenty that are under16 to now. i actually used to have a button-on badge so i could take it off and take off my tie and go in after school =p

Oh my. I take pleasure in the simple games: when S and I need to kill some time, we get a couple of 50-cent tokens and share games – one person pilots the plane, the other mans the weapons. Double the fun.
Of course, this is coming from someone who plays Street Fighter by the RKP technique – “random key pressing”.
