FeedDemon Begone!

I became an RSS addict a year or two ago and have been trying to push people to get their blogs RSS enabled.

For those that don’t know, RSS basically lets you subscribe to websites so instead of having to check them periodically, they let you know when they’ve updated. Think of it like sending you your magazine instead of you going to the store everyday to see if the new issue is out.

Anywho, for the longest time, I used Trillian Pro because it had a built in plug-in. What better way to check feeds than having it build into your instant messaging software? But the software has been incredibly buggy, showing updates multiple times or sometimes not showing any update at all for days when the site has clearly been updated. Aside from that, I also couldn’t organize them and the list was growing quickly. I now have close to 80 RSS feeds.

So I finally tried a different program: FeedDemon which was better.from the organization standpoint. Two problems: 1) it wasn’t free and 2) it was a separate application.

Newsgator is a program that a colleague has recommended time and again. It’s a plug-in to Outlook and lets you organize everything as you would with Outlook, using search folders, regular folder hierarchies, etc. Sounded like the perfect tool for me except again, it wasn’t free but it also wasn’t expensive and I was about ready to just pull out the wallet as soon as FeedDemon’s trial period was over.

Then I found intraVnews and in the 5 mins since I’ve instealled it, it looks good. There are some usability issues that I won’t get into but overall, it does everything I want and it’s a free plug-in to Outlook. Huzzah!

I’ve been using Sharp Reader for a while and it’s not bad…

I’ve been using Sharp Reader as well. And it’s free. It’s pretty good so far. Allows you to set how often you want to check for updates for each site, how long you want to keep said updates, etc. What I do like is that I can close it and not be bothered by updates, but I can still keep my Outlook open for emails. Can you do that with the Outlook plug-ins? Just wondering since I’m one of the biggest news junkies there is and have to turn it off when I work. Also, it doesn’t use Technorati to find “conversations” happening around a particular post like Newsmonster does, but I think I’d get sucked into a quagmire of blogs if Sharp Reader did that.
