MMORPG Gaming Studies
I am 2 days away from my thesis deadline. The tests and results have been interesting and I lvoe talking about it. Typing about it is another matter altogether but then I’ll be glad I went through the process of collating the infromation in a digestible format (if by digestible, I mean a 70-100 page monstrosity of cruft that nobody but three people in this world wil end up reading end to end – myself not being one of those three).
In doing my research for relevant studies, I recently came across The Daedalus Project: MMORPG Research, Cyberculture, MMORPG Psychology. Fascinating. I haven’t looked through it in detail yet but there look to be some interesting data on an emerging phenomenon. Games becoming so addictive that the cyber neanderthals literally keel over and die certainly makes a strong case that there’s some interesting psychological, sociological, anthropological and technical studies that can be made. Not surprisingly, HCI is a combination of those subjects and also has a lot to study in that respect.
This weekend, we head to Helsinki to wach them play Czech Republic in the World Cup of Hockey 2004. We also have tickets for Sweden if they make the quarter-finals which all depends on their goalie. While out there, we’ll stop through Tallinn, the capital of Estonia as well as Turku and Aland before cruising to Stockholm. More importantly, 3M and Van are coming out here and it’ll be their first trip to Europe – and their first vacation alone (once they get rid of us to go to France).
