OK/C Character Sketches

A few weeks ago when Kat and I went to Scotland, we spent a lot of time on a bus traveling. Rather than bring a book, I decided I’d bring my near empty sketch book and draw on a piece of paper instead of my laptop for once. I also did what I should have done a long time ago: more character design sketches for the main characters of OK/Cancel.

I was mostly trying to figure out what level of detail I preferred to draw them and experiment with facial expressions (eyes and mouths in particular). Trying out difficult camera angles was also important. What does the top of his head look like? What about from behind?

In addition, I wanted to try to convey their overall personalities more. iVan’s obnoxious, innocent and oblivious nature vs. Tomo’s more cynical, down-trodden, snide and sometimes bewlidered persona. Here they are:

Cool. I wish I had that talent.

Just curious, but what tools do you use when working on the computer?

On the computer, I use a Toshiba M200 Portege tablet PC to draw directly into Photoshop CS. That’s pretty much it. I experimented with Flash but in the end found I felt more comfortable in PS. Nowadays, I set the pressure sensitivity to be quite firm and use a 9 pixel round brush which gives me a pretty large range of thickness without ever changing brushes.

Awesome. Just awesome. Given the choice between sketching on paper or on your tablet, how do you feel about them, and which would you prefer? Merits of each?

Hey Kev – these are great! And their personalities DO come through. I actually looked at the pictures before reading what you wrote and could tell what you were trying to convey. Nice job.

You know what you should do? You should draw the mouth and eyes separate from the head, and then animate your drawings on the computer like South Park! :D

Tomo says to iVan “Git back in the kitchen and bake me a PAIII!!!”

OK/C Character Sketches

For those who might be interested in the workings of our art, I posted a couple of OK/C character sketches in my personal blog. I will probably do this more often in the fall and will occasionally mention them here. If you’re curious about our process …
