Ending Conversations

Ever do that thing where you say a joke and everyone laughs nervously but either don’t really get the joke or think it’s not funny? The nervous laughter is inevitably followed by awkward silence.

In the land of instant messaging, laughing seems to be a convenient conversation stopper. Check your history or log files and you will probably find many conversation threads that end with “hehe”, “lol”, or “:)”.

Next time, if you’re IM’ing with someone who you can’t seem to get rid of, try it out.

hehe

Totally know what you mean. Sometimes I don’t have anything to say, so I just smile. :-)

For ending IM conversations, I prefer something more definitive, like:
(that’s end-of-thread for the acronym-challenged). :)

Now I’m expecting, an ackward “lol” followed by loss of signal. :)

We actually did not pass through Barcelona in the January Spain trip that was mentioned on the Cadius mailing list, Jorge. Sorry about the lack of contact information but this site got pushed out ahead of schedule and I never got around to putting that information up. You can contact me at “web at kurioso” though.
