Tag Yourself

You’ve seen conference badges at conferences and nametags at big parties. At the recent Adaptive Path party, I “tagged” myself. Ha. Ha. I’m so clever, right? I mean gee, Kevin, you’re such an original character. Well let’s see what happened. I put:

and then ran out of space. During the course of the night I had one person come up and just start talking to me about Canada because he was also Canadian. Another felt compelled to come talk to me because he was a fan of comics. All this at the geeky design party with the digerati. No, “so what do you do?” or “what company do you work for?” or “did you see that latest thing on TechCrunch?”. I got to meet the _people_.

Refreshing.

So with conference season here. Please, at TED, eTech, SxSW, IASummit, CHI, NetSquared, etc, etc …

Tag Yourself

Yes please! I wholeheartedly agree.

Adding another dimension to yourself other than the technical really paints a better picture of who you are and how you distinguish yourself from every other geek in the room. (I mean, chrissake, the conference/party is about technology so yes, we already know you’re a geek, thanks.)

I went to a lecture once on social networking where the speaker suggested doing something along these lines. He said whenever you fill out a name tag, draw a picture or write something in addition to your name that will attract attention. He said people are bound to comment on whatever you do that is different and that is an easy way to avoid being a wallflower. I’ve been meaning to try it, but I always forget. Based on your experience, it certainly sounds like it’s a useful technique. I don’t think he was thinking of it as “tagging” though.

Do you do any work at Yahoo, or just get paid to go to conferences?
That’s almost as sweet as Trilogy, where they paid us to drink beer.

Not all of the conferences I’ve listed are ones I’m attending but it is conference season so I’m out and about a lot (or oot and aboot if you will).

Credit to BarCamp Austin for using nametags with room for tagging. Boo to all the attendees that only put their blog and tags like “geek” and “design” as their tag. Seriously. Geek. You’re at BarCamp. Ya think?

Glad to hear it, David! Hope you spread the word and more people will do the same. Too bad I didn’t get to meet you, though =(

Doin’ it at IA Summit. Big name tags. Big empty space on them for tagging.

I belive that they did this at Webzine, but there was certainly not enough room for tags on the badge. But it really is a good idea.
