The Departed

Rotten Tomato gave this movie a very high ranking, with comments like “epic” and “brilliant”. Okay, so I thought it was a good movie but maybe because I saw the original and that made me see where it had potential and lost it. The original had much deeper character relationships. In the original, there was clear history and tension between the police chief and the mob boss, there were clear guilt issues and attempts to leave the path taken by Damon’s character (rather than just wanting to kick the shit out of him) and there was a much clearer emotional connection between DiCaprio’s character and the police chief. Although both could have done better with the cat and mouse aspects of the thriller, Infernal Affairs still did better than Departed in that department, too. I liked Wahlberg’s character addition, except he didn’t have a big enough part and I was pleasantly surprised by Nicholson’s appropriateness in his role (but then later, not so surprised when I realized he was just playing crazy. Again). [imdb link]

it’s ok. we’re just snobby because we’re from the original gangsta Cathay. That’s right, say it loud and proud, “I’m a bona fide Cathayan!”
