Grindhouse

Quentin Tarantino and Robert Rodriguez’s tribute to the b-flick genre delivers in very different ways. At first, I found Rodriguez’s “Planet Terror” the more enjoyable of the double features with its unabashed, over-the-top, almost comedic take on the zombie sub-genre. Rose McGowan is stunning and Freddy Rodriguez, for lack of a better description, is ninja personified. But as viscerally entertaining as that was, the more I thought about it, the more I appreciated Tarantino’s “Death Proof” pacing and the true edge-of-your-seat, exhilarating and satisfying 30 minute finale that could only be accomplished with the build up he took the time to do. Like Snakes on a Plane, this really is best enjoyed in a theater with a crowd of enthusiastic fans. [imdb link]
